Farnham United win in dramatic fashion through an U17/18 penalty shoot-out

SSYFL were delighted to lend our support to the 2022 Waverley Cup by co-sponsoring and arranging the Trophies for this excellent event involving many of our member Clubs and Teams. We have been involved both years of the Waverley Cup and see this as a great opportunity to extend our support for Clubs who do a great job providing youth football in their local areas. We are open to suggestions from other SSYFL Clubs, a Mole Valley Cup perhaps?

Report of the Waverley Cup and final standings…

The Waverley Cup returned for its second consecutive year having started as a pilot tournament in 2021 post lockdown with six competing clubs (Farncombe Youth, Milford Pumas, Cranleigh, Elstead Sharks, Albury and Chiddingfold). With thanks to sponsorship from the South Surrey Youth League, Godalming Borough Council, Chelsea Football Foundation, Kitlocker and the Hall Hunter Partnership, the tournament was re-visited in 2022 and extended to eleven teams, with Farnham United, Ewhurst Juniors, Beacon Hill, Churt Juniors, Haslemere Youth added to the mix in an exciting

weekend across the 28th/29th May.

There were nearly 150 teams competing from U6 through to U18, with 17 gold, silver and bronze medals the prizes in each section of the tournament. The ‘Olympics style’ medal table saw Farnham United victorious, winning in dramatic fashion through a penalty shoot-out in the U17/18 section to take their fifth gold medal and the overall cup.

Well done to all the competing teams on the day and thanks to those who hosted namely Farncombe Youth, Farnham United and Cranleigh.

We’re joining in with the first National Silent Support Weekend to promote Respect in Youth Football, and our teams and clubs will play an important part. We’re encouraging spectators and coaches to show their support during the match through applause only. This will reduce pressure and confusion and give players a better opportunity to find their own voice and develop their game. So, all you have to do is not talk, you can applaud good play from both teams, and then tell us your thoughts about the experience so we can feed into a national campaign to make improvements for the future. A digital link to a survey will be shared after the weekend for you to fill in to collect this information. Join us and play your part on Silent Support Weekend 5 th and 6 th November 2022.
