Referees

SSYFL do not make Referee appointments or operate a Referees panel. Instead we provide a range of support tools and advice to enable Clubs to make their own appointments.

We help referees seeking appointments by directing them to suitable local Clubs, and informing them of opportunities we hear of as they arise.

Referee Fees

Officials are entitled to charge the following inclusive fee for all matches which must be paid in full before or directly after the match.

Referee Arrangements

  1. The home team are responsible for appointing and paying an FA registered referee for SSYFL league and cup matches (Double headers cost is shared). Every effort should be made to appoint an FA qualified Referee.
  2. If a registered referee is not available the fixture should still go ahead refereed by a suitable person agreed upon by the teams; once agreed upon the person appointed (referred to as a Club, Casual, or Volunteer referee) has the full powers, status, and authority of a registered referee.
  3. The opposition team manager/contact should be advised in advance of the match, preferably at least 48 hours notice, if a registered/qualified referee is not available, so they may agree to the proposed casual referee or propose their own alternative referee appointment.
  4. If the teams do not agree upon a suitable casual referee, the situation should be referred to the League at the earliest opportunity to determine what happens next, which may include deciding the outcome of the fixture if the match does not go ahead and there are party/ies found to be in default in accordance with League rules.
  5. It is understood coaches or parents often officiate younger mini soccer development fixtures and this is acceptable, although a registered referee is preferred. Helping newly qualified mini soccer referees achieve their qualifying games is appreciated.
  6. Teams are encouraged to build up their own registered referee contacts to take fixtures on a regular basis.
  7. Referees between the ages of 14 and 16 are only eligible to officiate in competitions where the players' age band is at least one-year younger than the age of the referee e.g. a 15-year-old referee may only officiate in competitions where the age banding is 14 or younger, however, the recommended gap is two years.
  8. The League may be able to put you in touch with Surrey FA registered referees that you may be able to appoint. Complete a Referee Enquiry Form if you need help given as much notice as possible. If you are affiliated to another county or on county borders, please contact the relevant county FA for access to their equivalent list, some referees appear in more than one county list. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee help, but we shall try.
  9. If there are multiple games at your ground consider bundling requests, or perhaps another team in your club may have a Referee arranged before or after your game you can also appoint.
  10. We cannot guarantee an appointment through our suggestions, coverage in some areas is patchy as lists and availability has built up around local Clubs and Leagues, and local Referees may already have standing relationships
  11. The League does not require you to mark or comment on a Referee as a matter of course but you may send feedback ad hoc to the League using the League Report Form. This is used to provide feedback to the County  FA Referees Development Officer and/or Clubs in the case of casual referees to recognise good performance and/or seek improvements in officiating standards.
